Mt Eliza Farmers’ Market – Sun 26-Feb-2012
One of the great delights of living so close to the Mount Eliza Village is the wide diversity of community activities that happen there. And this weekend is no exception. The Mt Eliza Farmers’ Market is happening on Sunday, 26th February 2012.
I’ll be nominating the market for the Delicious Magazine Awards – it’s a chance to win a trip for two to Hamilton Island! Apparently Maggie Beer (one of the judges) has already visited to do some homework!
Market Highlights
This month’s highlight of the market will be the return of ‘Pure Vegies’. Caroline’s vegetables are grown right here in Mt Eliza and she will be selling this Sunday: sun ripened tomatoes (get in quick), beetroots, carrots, pumpkins, spring onions and whatever else is ready to be picked the morning of the market. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!
Also at the market this month will be: local garlic, organic leafy greens, Flinders wood fired authentic sourdough breads, new season Red Hill apples and pears, breakfast plates made with ingredients from the market (poached eggs atop a salad of healthy scrummy goodies), bunches of local wildflower arrangements, freshly squeezed juices with ingredients from the market, free range eggs, live hens (if it isn’t too hot) and more.
So come along and help me to support our local farmers obtain a fair price for their hard work. We are constantly being hammered with cheap imported fruit and vegetables, often of inferior quality, that most people in government or authority seem oblivious to the impact it is having on agriculture. Couple this with the high mark-up prices supermarkets charge compared to what the farmer gets, and it’s difficult to see how agriculture can survive for long in this country.
Just last week we saw in Safeway, Australian Valencia oranges for $4.98 per kg (almost $5000 /tonne) when farmers are receiving less than $150 / tonne (15 cents per kg) for the same fruit.
Let’s make a difference and keep Australian farmers on the land!
Alejandro the Mexican musician will be strumming his tunes from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm on the Village Green. So there’s something for everyone.
