Kitchen at Mount Eliza home unit for saleSharing my thoughts about the Mount Eliza home unit and writing this blog has made me realise just what I have achieved since moving in just over two years ago.

Kitchen renovations

The kitchen was only partly renovated when I bought the unit. There were still some old cupboards on the wall that did not line up with the new kitchen bench and a very old extraction fan in the window that sounded like a helicopter taking off when you turned it on.

I lived with my new fridge jutting out into the kitchen for a while, but knew it was only temporary and that it would fit in the space properly when the renovations were complete. As you can see from the photo, my skilled cabinet maker fixed this problem, plus installed a shelf above the bench for my microwave and built more cupboards and shelves for the wall above the stove. A new Westinghouse range hood, plus replacement glass in the window, finished it all off.

Bathroom/Laundry renovations

The renovations to the bathroom, laundry and toilet was another matter altogether. I’m sorry now that I didn’t take before and after photos of this area as, although it was in reasonable condition, the original layout was simply dreadful.

We totally gutted it and started afresh. I’m more than happy with the results. It’s now a very usable space with a clean, modern look, new shower, basin, taps, wall fan, laundry trough and plenty of bench space, shelving and lighting. The matching floor tiles in the separate toilet give that room a fresh look as well.

The euro style laundry features a LG Inverter DirectDrive 8.5/4.5kg combined washer dryer making for a compact and practical setup.

Bedroom storage renovations

I had a wonderful father/son team who worked on the renovations for me. The son is an expert tiler and bathroom renovator, while his father is a skilled cabinet maker, who took care of all my storage needs.

He replaced the built-in robes in the bedrooms with more shelving and storage space in each, plus gave the linen cupboard a revamp. They have all been constructed in white laminate that matches the new kitchen and bathroom/laundry cupboards.

New Blinds

Just simple things, like replacing the old window curtains with clean and fresh looking day and night window blinds throughout the apartment, made a bigger difference than you’d expect. Not only do they look so much better, they give it an up-to-date feel, modern lines and make the rooms look bigger and lighter than before.

An outside blind on the bathroom window helps to keep that room much cooler in summer as well.

Heating and cooling

I also had a Mitsubishi Electric G-inverter split system room air conditioner/heater installed in the lounge area. The apartment had no heating or cooling when I bought it. Being solid brick with a concrete base and ceilings, the temperature stays remarkably even. However it is nice to now have a backup in place for those really hot summer days and cold winter nights that can happen from time to time.

External storage

I had a small, Colourbond outdoor storage unit (approx. 2.25 m by 0.78 m) installed on the rear terrace. It’s great for keeping gardening gear and sporting goods out-of-the-way and secure.

Exterior paintwork

In my first year in the home unit the body corporate had all of the exterior paintwork re-done. So that’s something that won’t need to be revisited for quite some years to come.
